Rome concludes F1 deal

Mon, 21 Dec 15:00:16 2009

Rome has won the rights to stage an F1 race after a deal was agreed with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

According to reports by Sky Italia, course planner, Maurizio Flammini has said that they have been given the green light and it now appears that a Rome Grand Prix could be on the calendar in 2012.

"The agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to give life to the Rome Grand Prix has been done and signed," confirmed Flammini, a former Formula Two front-runner and World Superbike Championship promoter. "The appropriate course still has to be defined."

Talk of an F1 race around the streets of Rome - like that in Monaco, Singapore and Valencia - emerged back at the start of the year and while some believe it might come at the expense of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, it now appears that won’t be the case.

Indeed the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno believes that Monza will keep its place as there will be two Italian Grand’s Prix.

"We think the Rome Grand Prix would be very important and we are in favour of it," he explained.

"Monza is a grand prix on the circuit and the Rome Grand Prix is integrative to that. It's not a replacement."

Spain however, is currently the only country that welcomes the sport twice a year, courtesy of Barcelona and Valencia – the latter running under the European GP banner. Italy used to hold two grand's prix a season, until Imola - the San Marino GP - disappeared from the schedule after 2006.
