Rows two and three at the Nürburgring

Rubens and Jenson ready to pounce at the ’Ring.

After an enthralling qualifying session at the Nürburgring, the Honda Racing F1 Team’s drivers will start tomorrow’s European Grand Prix from fourth and sixth places on the grid. For the first time this year, Rubens Barrichello will start ahead of his team-mate Jenson Button.

Both drivers experienced some handling problems in yesterday’s practice sessions, so the team’s engineers worked hard overnight to find more performance from the RA106. They made changes to both cars and their progress was reflected in the competitiveness of both drivers this afternoon.

In the first of the three qualifying sessions, the top 15 cars were separated by only one second. Jenson set the fastest time in sector one en route to the fourth fastest time, while Rubens was 0.2s slower in ninth place.

In the second session, it was Rubens’ turn to be fourth fastest, 0.3s ahead of Jenson. Rubens then repeated that placing in the final, definitive qualifying session with a time of 1:30.754s. Jenson was 0.2s slower in sixth.

Tomorrow’s race is over 59 laps.

RUBENS BARRICHELLO
“I’m very pleased with 4th place on the grid. It’s another demonstration of how good the car and the team is and that we are making real progress. We now just have to keep our feet on the ground and focus on the race because I think we have a good strategy and we have shown good pace in free practice this morning. I’m looking forward to it.”

JENSON BUTTON
“I couldn’t get a good balance, which is pretty normal for me around here! The car just didn’t feel good so I wasn’t feeling comfortable. I locked up in turn one which didn’t help my last lap time, but it didn’t cost much; it probably wouldn’t even have been a place. I think we showed this morning that our race pace is there and we found a nice balance for the long runs, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the race brings.”
