I'd heard something about this on the radio, but didn't quite catch the full details until now. I don't recall anything like this happening before where the vechicle returns back down the track. :(

Very tragic. :(

Shelly Howard and son Brian's tragic deaths

Date 2005-04-04

The world of motor sports has been shocked to learn of the tragic death of Michelle "Shelly" Howard and her son Brian this past Saturday, April 2, 2005. Racing has and will always remain a dangerous risky sport and the Howard family was well aware of that fact.

Shelly Howard, 59, won the NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster championship twice, in 2001 and 2003. Her most recent win came at the Division 4 season opener in Baytown, Texas.

On Saturday night, Howard was making an exhibition run at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma prior to the first "Midnight Drags" event. Shelly Howard Racing's home base is Tulsa, the city where Shelly was a registered nurse.

The tragic accident saw her Alcohol dragster go out of control with a possible stuck throttle. The dragster went into a blowover (all four wheels left the racing surface) before flipping and being sent back toward the starting line. The speed has been estimated by the Tulsa police at nearly 250 miles per hour.

Her dragster struck the team's chase truck sitting behind the starting line. Brian Howard, 36, was in the vehicle. Neither Shelly nor Brian had a chance of surviving the severity of the accident.

At this time, the family remains in seclusion, the track owner and the NHRA are respecting the wishes of the family.

Shelly and Brian are survived by Dr. Paul Howard (husband and father) and Jennifer and Tracy (daughters and sisters).
