Takata melds air bag with seat belt

Auto parts maker Takata Corp. will release a seat belt with a built-in air bag that inflates in the event of a collision, becoming the first company in the world to introduce such a product.

The safety device, named the Air Belt, will debut in the Lexus LFA luxury sports car Toyota Motor Corp. plans to launch next month, Takata said Thursday.

Because the seat belt air bag protects the driver's chest and prevents the head from striking the side window and other objects, it makes side and curtain air bags unnecessary, the Tokyo-based company says.

Takata is set to market the product to other automakers.

I wonder if they will make an option to add these to older vehicles that have air bags but no side curtain air bags. I also wonder how big the seat belt will actually be, thickness wise.
