I´ve got my timing set to 18 deg. and I felt a better throttle response and top end was not affected at all

Hello again !!
I have a mate who owns an MX-5, and all MX-5 owners seem to get a good response from moving the timing from stock, which I think is 10deg to 14 or even 18deg....
My question is do our Sol's get any benifit from this (very cheap) mod??
AFAIK it only gives you a boost down low, and top end isn't affected, but hey a gain is a gain right?!?
