Tires on '00 Si Rims

2426 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  EAS Si '00
OK. It's time to get new tires on the stock rims of my '00 Si (pieces of shit if I've ever saw one). Which should I get? I tried a search on this topic but there are so many suggestions on which to get. My friend has Potenza's on his '00 Trans Am Ram Air and said they are great. Mind you, I live in St. Louis, MO. The weather conditions are dry and wet (with occasional snow). Money isn't an issue. Also, should I stick to the same size as the stock tires are or is there a better size to get for our rims? Thanks in advance.

i would say go with either 195-50 15 or 205-50-15. Try to get something thats V-Rated. Just dont drive like an ass in the rain and youll be ok. Im sure the land in st. louis is pretty flat so you dont have to worry about hills much.

i suggest:

falken azenis sport (205-50 15)- 76.00 from distcount tire direct (tires.com)

nitto nt450 (195-50 15)- 59.00 from the same place

nitto nt450 (205-50 15)- 65.00 same as above

plus free and fast shipping.

ive had both the 450s and the falkens on my car and they are WWAYYYYYYY better than stock. And cheaper then the crappy michelins also.

the 195 will appear to have a lower profile but wont be as wide. The falkens grip better but wear away quicker.

I have the Kumho's, and for 60bucs each I have no complaints at all. The only problem with them is that they suck in the snow. I don't plan to take my car out in the snow, so I really don't care. If money isn't a problem then I would go with something a little bit better. The potenzas are greats tires.

As far as the size goes, I went up to 205/50/15. You'll see that most of us went up to that size.
People who suggest Nitto tires don't know anything about tires - UGH!

These tires are great for dry and some wet:
BFG g-force TA KDs - great tire dry or wet. Twice the price of Azenis or 712s. Handles heat better.
Falken Azenis Sport - inexpensive and great grip. Good wet grip when full tread and up to 4mm tread. Stiff sidewalls. If it gets too hot it gives away.
Bridgestone S03s - great dry and wet grip.
Yokohama ES100 - a new tire
Kumho 712s - great price not as sticky as some of the above. I used it last year for autocross with great results
Yokohama A520s - loud as they wear

I recommend having a 2nd set of wheels for winter tires.

 ....well you are entitled to your opinion and I'm not one to start a debate....but in my "HUMBLE" opinion,,,the Nitto's Extreme that I purchased are the best thing since slice bread ( for my daily driving in both rain, snow and dry roads..).

I may not know much about tires ....but I know how the handling of my Si improved in all of the above mentioned driving scenearios...........read my sig...........:D

Well yeah going from crap OEM Michelins to anything else is better. But going from Nittos to something else you will be amazed too. All except for the Paradas. THey are ok.

Pick up the latest issue of Grassroots Motorsports has a full street tire testing in it.

I bet that the testing and data is great for general information, but dollar for dollar and an all seasons tire not just for summer driving....these are good enough....
I know I could have bought the Potenzas .......but not for over $100 ea......so for $54 ea. from discount tire.com...I'm happy..... :D

BTW CivicSiRacer I use these all year around.....and what would be your recommendation for all seasons, all year around tires....and I'm too cheap to buy a second set of tires.... ;)
I have Nitto Exit GS 195-55-15 and have no complaints, but when these wear out I'm going for some 205-50-15 BF Goodridge or Falken Azensis

Do a search at http://www.tirerack.com pick from 195/55x15" or 205/50x15"

the BFG g-force TA KDWS is a good all season tire.
215?

will a 215/50 15 tire fit on the si rims?

I know guys who put 225/45x15" on their Type R wheels (for competition only though) and they have to run spacers or the tires hit the inner fenderwells.

Not really recommended but it should fit. 205/50x15s fit.
How about the size 195/50-15? Will those fit? I think I'm going to get the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position. They're on clearence at tirerack.com for $74 a tire. Whatcha guys think about that? Survey results rate this tire really high.

Your speedo will be off and (at least for my car) with 215/40x16" at 70mph my rpms are at 4500rpms.... LOUD on the highway :)
Thanks for all your help CivicSiRacer. I'm going to order the Potenza's today.
Aren't you bound to the stock sidewall aspect ratio if you want your speedo and odometer to work correctly?

Can anyone tell me the dimensions and weight of the Si wheel?
15 x 6.5? ~20lbs?

15x6" approx 16lbs.

You should keep the overall diameter the same. My Azenis are 23.1 in diameter. Stock is 23.3. My 215/40x16" Kumho 712s are 22.7.

So as long as you stay above 23.0" you should be fine. But the nice thing about a shorter tire is gearing and acceleration is much better :)
I am a die hard Yokohama fan. I've been riding on yoko avs' for about 6 years now and I love'em great on dry pavement and great on the wet stuff too. I highly suggest yoko's...
HEK, I hear the Dunlop SP9000 sport is a good tire. It has good traction on dry road and gets around well in the snow and ice. I'm not speaking from experience but from what I have heard.
