Ultimate Motor Swap for 98 Civic Hatch....

Ok first off... not gonna do the h22 or h23. Im very familiar with the ludes, well at least thats what im used to. Im not familiar with civics as far as engines go. What would the best engine swap with mods be. I would really like to have a turbo, but theres no point in having it if ya can't boost it good. Im wanting in the range of 250 to 300 horsepower if possible. Whatcha recommend.??

why not the h22? in the oct. issue of honda tuning they state that the h22 is capable of holding up to 600-700 hp, while the b series motor can hold up to 1000, unless your planning to do nothing more than a all out drag races it shouldnt matter, but it is your call, im planning on pulling my h22a4 out of my turbo'd lude and swap it into somthing else, prolli a civic, but a del sol is on the possible list also.... jmo...

i'd go with a crvtec turbo.
nah..i'd skip the VTEC head. VTEC head bumps up compression and who cares if you have VTEC when u have 15 pounds. I say just get a straight B20 with a skunk 2 manifold and BOOST IT!

I'm going LS/turbo.
why not b20 turbo? the installation would be exactly the same and everything, with .2 extra liters of displacement.
Because I don't want to spend any more money on a new engine.
Ok well, whats the better way to go between b18, and b20 . With turbos, and pricing and such.
also what is needed and required to do the b20 swap???
LS/VTEC could put out some power if its build correctly. But a B20Turbo will put out great gains versus LS/VTEC. You should ask your self do you like All Motor or you want to Boost. Boosting means unstable power band turbo lag. Some people ju8st love the vtec engaging point. the distinct vtec roar, but some go for the blow off sound swooosh.
Well vtec don't mean shit to me... I drove a 23 prelude that was non vtec and smoked the shit out of all vtecs in my town. Everybody thinks vtec is a f*****g supercharger or something. Ive never seen it really do enough to win a race for ya.

so you're saying vtec doesn't add power? try racing a h22 prelude. you'll get your ass kicked.
Vtec isn't responsible for the extra 40 horsepower. Its built completely different. Thats like saying that the s2000 makes 240 hp only cause vtec. Its a smaller engine than both ludes and would make em both look like go carts. By the way, the H22 lude didn't beat me. But i does make more horsepower. All im saying is, ive never been thrown back in my seat due to vtec .

well nobody said vtec was some miracle supercharger. the (obvious) reason vtec is fun is cuz it adds power. and yes stock against stock a h22 lude will take a h23. think about it, 35 more horses does make a difference.
I have a 95 Honda Civic HB. I've been considering doing a LS Turbo setup for the longest time but have been hearing a lot about the B20 engine. Online I see the 96-98 (CRV) B20B Long Block for $759. Is that what I would be swapping in to my car. I'm going to do a lot of forum searching but still wanted to post this.
I don't know what difference it makes when turbo'd, maybe better because of the displacement, but stock to stock the LS makes more power than a b20. The b20 puts out 124 while the b18 puts out 140.
First of all, what are your plans with the car? Road race, autox, drag? Each motor has its own positives and negatives. If you want a h22, it has more power out of the box but you gotta compensate for the extra added weight by getting better suspension. An h22 weighs about 385 lbs and b series motor weighs roughly around 300 lbs. The h22 I believe is a better motor because it has more power to begin with and it also makes more power after each mod because it has more displacement. And whats al this talk about 700 hp h22's? Be realistic here and don't believe everything you herar from a import magazine. Also remember to upgrade brakes.

The reason the b18b makes more hp than the b20b is because of the restrictive exhaust manifold the b20 has. The b20 makes more torque tho. You need to look at the torque curve and you will see that the b20 makes more torque throughout the powerband than the b18b. Don't look at peak numbers.
This will be my daily driver, but i'm still going to be taking it to the track. If I decided to work with the H22a, does anyone know of any shops in the Bay Area that will do the work?

Also I hear a lot about loosing handling when you swap in the h22, If you upgrade your suspension and everything will you still be able to notice the difference?
