theres quite a bit of play between the upper control arm and "knuckle?" does this mean the ball joint thats in the control arm is very kaput?
when you grab the knuckle at the top were it meets the upper arm and use some force you can jiggle it around.

whats the name of the thing thats connected to the upper arm?

here is a good way to test it....put your tire on....jack up the car....then grab the wheel and shake it back and forth....it if has a lot of play then yes......
