Vice President Watanabe to become next Toyota Motor president

(Kyodo) _ Toyota Motor Corp. is set to appoint Executive Vice President Katsuaki Watanabe as president to succeed Fujio Cho, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Tuesday.

Cho will become vice chairman while Chairman Hiroshi Okuda will remain in his post at least until his term as Japan Business Federation chairman ends in May 2006, the business daily said.

Cho is expected to eventually replace Okuda as Toyota Motor chairman, it said.

Watanabe, who originally came from Toyota's procurement division, has led the automaker's business planning and purchasing sectors and served as factory chief at the Motomachi plant in Aichi Prefecture. He is currently in charge of public relations and housing operations.

Watanabe is well known for his role in purchasing parts and materials, the paper said.

The report also said Senior Managing Director Akio Toyoda, the eldest son of founder and honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda, will become a vice president.
