The manual transmission on my '89 honda accord lxi is making a weird noise. This happens when the car is in neutral and when in gear I am sure. The noise is that similar as when frying eggs. The noise is intermittent though, it will came ever 20 seconds and last for 3-5 seconds then be silent. Any ideas? I am wondering if I am starving my transmission out fluid but I don't know for sure.--Thanks.eps

It is a manual transmission and it hasn't been service in a long time. Someone suggeted that it might be the release bearing--I am looking into that. --thanks.

you ran old fluid and it lost its properties to keep the seals soft and its foaming/build up.

if you press the clutch and the noise goes a way than it is definitly not the release bearing; in fact it is an internal transmission bearing and should be serviced immediatly because if the balls from the bearing get into any of the gears you can kiss your tranny good bye.

However if it only makes the noise when you press the clutch than it is the release bearing. Either way you need to get that thing checked out by a transmission specialist. It is normal for bearings in a transmission to go bad after 150000 miles.
