What does it mean when a car backfires? My car backfires every now and then when I'm using the nitrous and it scares the shit out of me, can i make it stop?

I only use the nitrous after 5000 rpm.

thanx

it could backfire if:

1. your car is running lean. 2. there could be an exhaust leak. 3. misfire of ignition.

i think you are running lean. i can see that you have 550cc and fpr.. i think that should be enough but maybe if you get a fuel pump it may help out.

i thought backfiring comes from running rich... like too much fuel goes into your cylinder, runs out of oxygen to be mixed with and doesn't get burnt, goes through your exhaust pipe and if the pipe is hot enough the extra fuel mixes with the fresh air at the tip of your exhaust and ignites

so, is it really that bad when it backfires(rich is better than lean, right?), can it affect the engine?

backfiring is fine and not dangerous... its normal with a very unrestrictive weekend... the only harm i could see it doing and this is minimal and a long shot is over time messing up the material in your muffler that quiets your exhaust... i wish i had a rx-7 so i could spit flames out my tail pipe

If it wont harm the engine then I guess the only problem would be the sound(scares the shit out of me).

thanks guys

also, on the movie "gone in 60 seconds" on of the cars that they steal has flames coming out of the tail pipes. how do they do that?

no....they sell a kit in Japan that makes your engine run rich, then a spark plug located in your exhaust ignites the unburnt fuel resulting in a fireball.

they actually have competitions in Japan to see how long the fire comes out of the exhaust.

pretty weird stuff,

drive safe,

aj :)

is that legal? I mean, if a cop sees you doing that will he give you a ticket or is it legal?

99% of the time a backfire means you are really rich. While it will not do immediate damage to your motor (although it could hurt your muffler), it will eventually wash out your rings if you run it like that a lot. You will be better in the long run if you correct your A/F ratio.

Those tail pipe flame things were really popular on hot rods in the late 50s and 60s. Its funny to see ricers doing it now. They used to put a spark plug in the tail pipe, run the car rich and have a switch to fire the plug when they wanted flame.
