205 = How wide the tire is in mm

40 = Percent of the width that the tire is tall (profile)

17 = Rim size

also there should be

M+S = Mud and snow

S, H, or Z speed ratings (there are more but i cant remember what they are)

s = 112 mph

h = ~135 mph

z = 160+ mph

EG is the chasiss code for your civic it tells you what year and body type which i think would be the 96+ 2dr coupe or hatch because EJ is the 92-95 coupe

That is what EG is :eek:

I am a little confused about the 40% thing!!

Someone was saying it's 40% of the 205 which would be almost half the width of a tire. No way in hell the sidewall is an 20% the width of a 205 tire!!

I learned most of that stuff about tires while i was having mine replaced. I could be wrong about the profile tho....but i am pretty sure thats it because i also saw it on speedvision - Popular Hot Rodding TV i believe. Oh yeah i almost forgot to add that 40% of 205 is only 82mm but i dont have a ruler handy to check it out on a tire.

Yes, it was me who told you.. I'll explain it once more for the rest of you..

The first number is the width of the tire in mm.. i.e. 205/40R17 - The width of the tire is 205mm

The second number is the aspect ratio (percent of the width). The height of the sidewall (thickness) of a 205/40R17 tire is: 40% of 205 (205 x .4).. 40 is the middle number (aspect ratio) and 205, is the width.. Therefore, the thickness of the sidewall in mm for a 205/40R17 tire is 82mm

The R stands for radial, sometimes preceded by a letter, which is the speed rating.. i.e. 205/40ZR17 That is a Z rated radial tire

The last number is the diameter of the rim in inches.

Hope this helps! :D :p

I thought that EK was only a japanese - european chasiss code.....the Civic Type R is an EK. Plus i was on autotrader a few mins ago to verify that and all of the vins i found on any 96-00 listed as an EJ and all 92-95 coupes listed as EJ. EG was only found on 92-95 hatchbacks and sedans.

I thought 99-00 Civics are EJ8 and 96-98 are EJ6 (USDM)

I dunno, I have no idea.. Just listen to RageAgainstNate, haha

I don't think so man:
4th gen Civic = EF
5th gen Civic = EG
6th gen Civic = EK
7th gen Civic = EP

Those are the Japanese chasiss codes. DX, LX, and EX are American model codes. They don't apply to anywhere else besides the US. Civic coupes are introduce by the US in January 1996 and before that Civic coupes only exist in the US (except hatchbacks). In Japan and most Asian countries new generation Civic comes out a year ahead than the US.

They always have a number following the code. For example, 92-95 Civic Si (Hatchback) is EG6, 96-98 Civic SIR (JDM Hatchback) is EK4, Civic Type-R is EK9, and the 2002 Civic Type-R is EB3.

It is all in the end of HyperRev Magazine Vol. 31. That's some good $hit to read but it is written in Japanese.

Sorry man, you were right and I was wrong. Does Honda use different chassis on the same year of JDM and USDM Civics? I meant why do they have different chassis code?

It's cool, there was a bunch of confusion and I actually wanted to see what the correct code was, so I went and looked.. don't worry about it :D ;)
