i just got a 94 del sol VTEC.
the dealer told be to use premium gas, so ive been putting in 94 octane from sunoco.
i used to just use regular in my 92 civic Si
are all the B series VTEC engines supposed to use premium gas?
i was told you get detonation if you dont...
what do you guys use?

This is directly from my manual for my Vtec:
(VTEC model)
Use a premium unleaded gasoline
with a pump octane number of 91
or higher.
If you are unable to find premium
unleaded, you may sustitute an
unleaded regular gasoline. The
engine will compensate for the
lower octane, but you may notice a
slight decrease in power as a result.

Hope that help

Highest octane I could find here is 91. :( My friend uses 86 in his Civic Si and doesn't have any problems. As long as you don't hear knocking in the engine, that sound means you to go higher in octane. :)

yah, i have a 94 vtec sol and my manual also says 91 octane or higher. i always and only go to chevron and use the same pump. i have always and only put supreme gasoline in my vtec sol. dont know exactly what number octane it is, but it is either 91 or higher.

hope that helps.

also, you dont have to put 91 or higher. as the manual also says that you can use regular gas but you wont get as much power and performance out of the engine. exactly what tha dood above me said. thats what is in my vtec manual as well.

What!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Southern California and the highest Octane here is 91. There used to be 92 but that slowly disappeared. There are some places you can get special racing fuel, do not know what it is, but generally you only see 91 as the highest.

It might have to do with CA having extreme emission laws, or something like that.

What are the prices like for your higher octanes?

Over here it is like (not exact):

87 -> $1.10
89 -> $1.20
91 -> $1.30

Once your friend puts a 92+ octane gasoline in his Civic Si, he'll see a slight difference in acceleration. I did with my del Sol when I went from 87 octane to 92 octane gasoline. Ever since then, I never even bothered with low octane gasoline... :D

Hold tight, you're gonna laugh...

In London, England, these are the current prices - assuming Euro litre - US liquid gallon conversion, and exchange rate at £1 = $1.45

95 Octane -> $4.10 / gallon
98 Octane -> $4.64 / gallon

Now you know why V8s aren't big news over here...

Does this mean the B series engines have knock sensors??

or have I added 2 and 2 together and got 55 ?? :D
