What to do? Buy a computer, or build one??

OK, I'm in the market for another computer. I've been to stores here and there, and most computers have stuff that I am not sure if I need.

My main use for a computer is editing/mixing mp3 and wave files, massive downloads of music, software, and movies. Burning all types of CD's, VCD's and Data disks, and of course just surfing the internet. I would like to try messing with editing Videos, and making true DVD movies in the future. I don't play video games, but I do watch my downloaded movies/flicks.

Basically I'm wondering ... what should I be looking for in a dept. store computer? Or should I just go the custom route? I'd like to keep the price under $1,000.00 if possible but I'll go broke if I have to. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

build your own, better components for less money :D
i would build one personally..but only if you know how..and if you don't..pm me..i'll give you a quote on a computer..i have my own business :D
Unless you want to learn how to build them, there really isn't much savings by building one if you look around. Not saying that you aren't going to save money, just that the savingsa aren't worth the time spent searching for parts and ordering them if you aren't interested in that kind of thing. Computer prices have gone down so much, it's simpler to just buy one.

I don't know if this link is still good but, you could pick up something like this and then build it up with the parts you want. I just buy them and then upgrade some parts. Lot less troublesome if you aren't into computers.
I used to build computers religiously. I've built 5 from the ground up (for myself, friends, and relatives). However, with the Dell deals that have popped up recently on Techdeals.net and slickdeals.net, there's no way I could build a computer cheaper than what they've been showing.

For example, last week I ordered a Dell Dimension 8200 with:

Pentium4 2.4A ghz, 533 mhz system bus
256 mb RambusDRAM PC800 (40ns, higher performance than normal RDRAM)
40 gig 7200 RPM, ATA100 hard drive
24/10/40 CDRW drive
Geforce4 MX 440 64mb video card (w/ tv out)
Intel Pro 10/100 NIC
Integrated sound (gonna add an Audigy)
Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse
Windows XP home (already got the pro upgrade from MS)
1 year full Dell warranty

ALL for $745.

There's no way I could beat that by building it myself. I tried. :D So yah, watch the Dell deals on slickdeals.net and techdeals.net :) You may be surprised.

Well, I'd like to build one but I've never assembled a computer from scratch. The most I've done is installed additional hard drives, more ram, and CD drives.... If it's fairly simple I'd be willing to give it a try, if it truly isn't worth it I'll just buy one.
Make your own. If you want to be more than casual with the video editing build a dual CPU system with an ATi All-In-Wonder class video card with a lot of RAM (512MB minimum) and a lot of hard drive space.

Learning how to build a computer and knowing what each component is something everyone should learn to do these days because of how important computers are now. There are plenty how-to guides on the web to aid you as well.
I would build one myself, but there are some good deals out there by Dell and so forth. If you buy one that is already built, make sure it doesn't have a bunch of integrated shit or boards permenately in (ie. video cards).
build one from scratch. In fact I am putting a new cpu on right now.
Here is what I got today:
P4 2.4
Soyo Dragon ultra mainboard
2 512mb DDR
550w power supply that has 3 cooling fans :)
total: 575.00 +/-

so now I can ditch this Duron chip and cheap ass main board even tho she was real good to me unlike the presario piece of shit i bought 2 years ago:mad:
sin u gunna let that duron/board gather dust?If so id glady pay for the shipping for u to send me it.I can always use another computer for somthing or another :).
