Wheel Tire Combo's

Just a general thread to find out what everybody is running and their thoughts on performance, price, value, etc....

Wheels: Focal R3 16x7 40mm offset

Nice looking, a bit on the heavy side, actual weight is unknown, i've never weighed them. Got them a few months before i started autoxing. A good balance between looks and performance. But i also have a set of Rodeo's 15x7 35mm, that i will soon use for racing. Price was good, got them used from a friend, $350 w/tires :D

Tires: Kumho Ecsta 712 205/45/ZR16

Good tire, not great, but good. Again, got these a few months before i started and did not find out about the Azenis until after the fact. After 6 days of racing and regular daily driving, the fronts have worn the outer edges. (Also due to me being a Novice and getting in too hot my first 2 days) Wet grip is very good. I have since gotten quite used to the feel of the tires and can keep them at their limits with minimal breakout. Price was $80 per tire (i know too much, but i desperately needed tires, and this is the best they had in stock) Once these get worn down, a set of 205/50/15 Azenis will go on my 15" wheels and be used only for autoX.

It's late, actually quite early, i can't , so i came up with this thread idea....

All Focal wheels are for show and weigh ALOT!

I'd invest in another wheel if you are going to get serious in autocrossing.

Something like the Kosei K1, SSR Competitions, Konig Subzeros, Enkei RPO1s
15 x 7 Kosei K-1s in silver

205-50VR15 Falken Azenis

And Darryl, yes, you need some lighter wheels and Azenis. Then you might be a bit closer to Art.
For autocross, I run OEM ITR wheels and a 225/50/15 front and 205/50/15 rear combo of Kumho Victoracers. I also run 5mm H&R spacers up front, all on stock suspension.

For roadracing, it's either OEM ITR wheels and 205/50/15 Kumho Victoracers all around, or ORM ITR wheels with 205/50/15 Falken Azenis.

I heat cycle all of the Kumhos, but I don't shave any of my tires.

The added width of the 225's in the front helps rotate the car at lower speeds, but the larger diameter and added weight is a problem that could be addressed by the new 225/45/15 Kumho that I haven't had a chance to try yet.

Personally, I think the K-1's are one of the best wheel values out there. 15X7's would be my choice.

This is VERY true, along with the Enkei RP-01, which is only about a pound heavier, and was on sale for 100 bucks each somewhere.

Ya i figured as much, funny how they call them "race wheels" on their site

Since i have wheels and tires for now, i'll work on the driver. He also needs time to save some race $$.
do they make the KUMHO V700 VICTORACERS in 225/45/15 or just the KUMHO ECSTA V700? Cuz i looked on tirerack.com and they don't list that size for the VICTORACERS

Umm, as far as performance, both tires perform pretty close to each other from what i was hearing at the ProSolo and Nat'l Tour. The major thing is eveyone is still trying to figure out tire pressures.

No, only the new ECSTA's come in 225/45. The older victoracers just have the 225/50 size. I'm still waiting to see if the new 225/45's fit in the rear of a teg. That would be schweet!

We've had some problems with them here. First of all, they need pressures MUCH higher than the old ones. We start them out at around 50 for the fronts. Second, a friend of mine corded a set in two days of mild track time at pressures that should have been about right. And that's not the first I've heard of this rapid cording issue. I think Kumho needs to spend some time with these to work out the problems (high pressures isn't a problem, but cording is, esp. if it's due to the higher pressures).
ialso have the focal r3 in a 16x7 with 40mm offset. exept i have gay toyo fz4s. what are some suggestions on tires? on a 16" wheel?

the wheels wheigh 21 pounds each.
:D im wanting some newwheels as well, but i have no money right now.
holy crap, 21lbs each...man i need new race wheels....

Hmm, thats VERY strange. The Ft. Myers Pro and Tour were held at Buckingham, which is one of the most abrasive surfaces in the country, and i didnt hear about anyone cording the Kumhos.

Tim Aro and Rod McGeorge did however kill a new set of hoosiers on a practice day, with 42 runs on a 30 sec course.

But ill keep it in mind...thanks

Well, that was actual track time, not autocrossing, so take it for what it's worth.

Hmm, just thinking out loud, but if the Kumhos are meant to be an autocross tire, they probably wouldnt stand up too well, maybe like autoX hoosiers.

Is that true? I didn't know that. The victoracers are a popular roadracing tire. The new Kumhos are an autocross tire?

I honestly dont know either....and with really soft sidewalls, i have no idea what they are meant to be.
soft sticky tires are usually good for drag racing...i don't know how they'd compare price wise to other drag tires though...

huh
I run on a set of 15" Speedline Corse 2017 wheels.

And a set of 225/50/15 Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires for racing.

What do you guys think about these tires compared to others? Personally, I have no complaints about them at all but they're the first set of racing tires I've used with this car so far.
