So I'll be doing a Y8 mini me swap soon, and I've been thinking of ways to activate VTEC, and how I'll tune it. Would it be better to just run VTEC the stock way and use a P28 ECU, or would getting a VTEC controller be a better investment?

If you get an RPM activated switch or a VTEC controller, you can set it so that the VTEC engages a little earlier, for a nice smooth transition.

Set it @ approx 4800 - 5300 RPMs dont go too low or you wont be able to secure torque in the lower RPM range. Remember, Honda R&D'd VTEC engagement to allow maximum torque BEFORE VTEC engages so if you engage VTEC BEFORE it's supposed to, you might want to run a custom ground cam to specs to allow maximum torque before it engages.
