OK.. this is a complete baffle to me. I've worked on cars for a while but suspension has never been really my game. Here's the story I go out to my car, find a nail in my tire, since I work at a hardware store there are nails all over the place in the parking lot. I need new tires anyway. I get a 2ton floor jack (hydralic) and place it under the support on the front drivers side. I start jacking the car up. I keep jacking the car up, and keep jacking it up and keep jacking it up. Finally, the jack is all the way up, and the damn tire is still on the ground!!! Now, the spring is completely extended and I have about 2 feet from the tire to the fender (might be a little over exaggarative) what's the deal??? the floor jack goes higher than the stock jack so I didn't even bother. What the hell is up with that??? Any ideas? This is totally crazy and I couldn't figure it out. I did not have a chance to jack up a different part of the car. Any ideas?? could it be the shock or the spring having gone bad or something? I mean for real, the tire rose just enough to let the air expand inside it, but not be movable or turnable. Ahhh!!

was the shock/spring assembly still attached at the top? were all the control arms attached where they should have been?
the spring should be fully extended long before the jack is all the way up. unless something's loose or broken i don't know how it would be on the ground.... sorry, that's not much help

I did have that axle replaced a while back, but there hasn't been any kind of looseness or vibrating from it. I will have to double check everything after work tonight. I doubt anything's broken, but the strut tower and everything is snugg in place and tightend down I know that. I wonder if it is a blown shock or damaged spring?? it is all stock suspension still.
yo my best bet is that your shocks are blown, buy new shocks
( KYB Gas Shocks ) take it to a auto shop, they'll put it up on a lift and they can change it for you,
unless u wanna ride like that no prob, it's just gnna be really really bounce.

I don't see how a blown shock or damaged spring will do this. As long as the shock shaft is still secure inside of the shock body and the shock assembly is secure, you shouldn't see what you are seeing. The only real explanation (that I can think of) is that something that should be connected isn't, and if that were the case, then you really should have noticed it while driving.
car drives smooth as hell... that's why im so baffled.. i got down there and checked everything. aired up the tires yesterday and decided to give the tires a spin while jacked up, and low and behold couldn't jack the car up. crazy... this car has had only a few problems ever in it's lifetime and each one of those problems, has gone unsolved. i had a smoking problem in the past with greyish/blueish smoke, and everyone including the dealer thouht it was a headgasket, well... had tons of work done and bam smoke still showed up and passed all compression tests and leak down tests. it's crazy how this car acts sometimes. so this is another one of those types of problems im assuming.
I'm curious... could you snap a pic or two of this phenomena and post it?... Prolly be easier to see whats going on with a visual.

When I jack my car as much as you've described, I actually get BOTH tires on that side off the ground. Somethings not right...

I was actually thinking about that, I will do it tomorrow when I get home from school... it's funny because the body started rising up in the back as well.... and the tire never came off the ground on the front drivers side.... but the body sure did lift on front and rear.
u know i have the same problem. why is that?? everytime i hit little bumps i hear sounds on all four sides.weird
i have had a simliar situation in the past (though probably not as drastic). i believe it was due to a slight driveway incline and the shocks i have. on occasions stiffer, higher performance shocks can have lots of rebound and therefore keep the tire on the gound more so inturn you have to jack the car up higher. when my shocks start to go bad they are easier to jack up and the wheel to lift off the ground because the shock compresses with less effort.

later
2 ton jacks are not big enough to lift the front of the car to put in jackstands. You need a jack with more lift height. Get a 3 1/2 ton jack, or a adjustable bottle jack if you want to use jackstands.
But he put it under the support of the drivers side. It should have plenty to jack up that side and the wheel come up. Try jacking up the other side and see if the same thing happens to that side?
well i was thinking about doing that, but being that i have nails in my tires with a slow leak if i go to the other side and jack it up, it will put all that weight on the drivers side front where the nails are, and i don't want it to like explode or something due to the weight... im probably going to run up to discount tire tomorrow and see what's up...
