installing aftermarket cd player....

i have a 98 civic ex

i want to put my cd player in myself and i want to put it behind the cup holders where there should be the stock cd player but its just empty compartment i also have the stock radio above it but want to keep it there and have the cd player underneath it behind the cup holders




does anyone have a write up or can anyone explain how to install an aftermarket cd player including all the wiring needed and what not any help would be appreciated thanks

Well, since it's still a Civic-specific install question it can stay here.

A radio install in the lower compartment is not difficult at all. The optional dealer/factory CD unit bolts into the steel bracket that the console trim attaches to, and it has a standard bolt pattern like aftermarket CD units so you won't need the installation sleeve or anything, just 4 little bolts.

Since you have an EX model, I believe you MUST keep your stock radio attached. It has circuitry in it for your keyless entry/alarm system - a cheap stunt by Honda to try to force people to only buy their stereo equipment or lose useful features of your car. At any rate, some companies make a special harness adapter that allows you to add an aftermarket head unit but still keep power running to the original unit. The price has come way down on these lately...here's one on Ebay right now for only $20 shipped, Scosche used to charge like $60 for it...
