Thermostat opening temperature???

I own a 97 Prelude. I just bought a new Honda thermostat the other day, put it in and it didn't seem like it was opening. After a half hour drive the lower hose was still ice cold and my temp guage was 3/4 of the way hot. (almost overheating) I took the thermostat back out and put my old one back in that is stuck open. I'm getting a new Honda thermostat tomorrow.

MY QUESTION IS:

What temperature do the Honda thermostats open at?

The thermo has 78 degrees Celcius stamped on it, which would mean 110 farenheit. I tested the thermo in a pot on the stove and it didn't open until 170 F!!

Is this right or did I get an F'd up thermostat??

Most cars are running 192-195 degree thermostats. I'm not positive about your car though. 170 seems a little cold.
Call an auto store and ask if they have an OEM replacement stat for your car and ask what temp it is. They should be able to tell you in farenheight.

Are you sure your thermometer you tested the stat with is accurate. See if it reads near 212 (depending on your altitude) when the water boils to see if it is right.

Don't forget you could have a bad temp gage or sending unit. :mad

I just checked the factory manual for a 91 accord it said it should start to open at 169-176 and be full open at 194.
