While Microsoft has not officially announced a drop in price for Xbox, several online retailers have already dropped the price from $299.99 to $199.99. The internet has been buzzing about a rumored price drop, including a scanned department store advertisement reporting the console would be $200 on May 23. It appears the price drop has come a week early.
Microsoft, it is believed, was to announce the price drop at their Monday E3 press conference in Los Angeles. However, Sony suprised many by dropping the price of the PS2 by $100 only days after stating they were happy with the current price of their system. By cutting the price of Xbox a week earlier than planned, Microsoft may be hoping to curb any momentum Sony sought to gain with their own price reduction.
With all three consoles at the same price, consumers will no longer be able to state price point as their leading decision when purchasing a system.
